Lent 2013 at St Clement’s

2013 February 5
by Gordon Reid

At the moment there are a minimum of 15 services a week at St Clement’s. So for Lent, I propose to add only one more, Stations of the Cross & Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament on Wednesdays in Lent at 6 p.m.

However, there will be two other extra events every week in Lent: on Sundays, I will conduct a class based on the Seven Words of Jesus from the Cross; and on Saturdays, the 10 o’clock Mass will be followed by a simple Lent Lunch of soup, bread and cheese.

The Holy Forty Days of Lent are when we, like Jesus in the wilderness, wrestle with our vocations. Like him, we have to resist the devil’s temptations:

1.   To pander to our own needs instead of the needs of others.

2.   To “convert people” by showy and “miraculous” ways.

3.   To use bad means even  for what we think is God’s work.

I hope we come to Easter once again with a renewed understanding that it is love. and love alone, that will fulfil God’s plan for us and for the world.
