I think spring has sprung. I base this belief not only on the fact that St Clement’s garden is full of daffodils and hyacinths, and that the magnolia and pear trees outside the Rectory windows are in full blossom , but also in the fact that I can no longer see the time and temperature from my bathroom window.

When I am performing the act that men do standing up and ladies do seated, I can look straight out of my bathroom window, through some trees, to the PECO building where news and adverts appear in revolving lights. When the adverts stop, the tower shows the time and weather, but when spring has sprung, the leaves begin to appear on the trees outside and I can no longer read either.

Of course, all I have to do is flush the loo and look at the weather on my computer, but I do like to multi-task, and until autumn, that particular joy is denied me in the bathroom.

“When I am performing the act that men do standing up and ladies do seated . . .”

I do not often shake hands in the bathroom as I am normally alone. That is , I believe what Father was aluding in saying “what men do standing up and ladies do seated”
