When a day full of dull or difficult work stretches ahead, I have always found that the way to get through it, and, indeed, to make the work less dreary or tiresome, is to plan a treat at the end of the day, such as a meal with good friends.

Surely this is one of the functions of the Christian hope of Heaven at the end of life? Such a sure and certain belief can sweeten the bitterest experience and smooth the roughest road.
