R.C. Ordinariate
Bishop John Broadhurst, Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of London with the title of Bishop of Fulham, has just announced that he has decided to become a Roman Catholic. He is going to do this by joining the new Ordinariate set up by the Pope for unhappy Anglicans.
I wish him well in his new Church, but cannot understand how he can with a clear conscience take any more confirmations or ordinations in the Church of England. The Bishop of London should have accepted his resignation the day he made his announcement (during which he described the C of E as “fascist”, while saying he was leaving because it had become too liberal for him).
He must know that in the eyes of his new Church he is a mere layman and that if he wants to be a Roman Catholic priest he will have to be reordained. So is he already exercising that prized Anglican right of private judgement and saying Rome is wrong about his Anglican orders? Maybe that is one of the “treasures” that the Pope has said he hopes Anglicans will bring with them into the Ordinariate – and here was I thinking it was just their wives!
Well, with Mt Calvary now starting on the road, it will be interesting to see what becomes of the whole concept. When one looks at the Anglican Use prayerbook, however, the patrimony appears very lean.
The “Book of Divine Worship,” is, at this point, a composite of much of the ’79 BCP, the Coverdale Psalter, much suggested devotional material and the Canon (Eucharistic Prayer options) of the Mass in compliance with those of the greater Catholic Church (Rome). As the time for greater reconciliation of Anglicans to the Holy See, the BDW will become increasingly codified.
Bravo Gordon! The Ordinariate is one more Roman sham. As for Mt Calvary’s vote it is sad. I thought that one of the principles of our Catholic Faith was that we are a people under discipline? How can we abandon the Catholic Faith for a ride with Rome by a simple vote? This is not Catholicism, it is protestantism at its worst. Calvin is rejoicing!
AH: How can you make such scathing remarks about our brothers and sisters in their search for unity? Do you believe that Benedict XVI wants to steal your freedom? What is your idea of a “ride with Rome,” or, excuse me, “one more Roman sham?”
By the way, where Mount Calvary, Baltimore is concerned, is the Episcopal Bishop of Maryland willing to offer direction? I’ll bet not! He is just one of the many “shepherds” [who,(mine)stopping for a beer or two along the way}, committed to making “Anglicanism” what it is today in this country.
I don’t know about “direction”–over the summer he was pleased to allow them to have Ackerman as an episcopal visitor.
Mr Holland, I suppose, would have the Archbishop of Canterbury humble himself in ashes and sackcloth before the Apostolic Nuncio at Westminster, begging forgiveness for the disobedience of his schismatical predecessor?
There was some discussion elsewhere about an “incident” at Mt. Calvary (blown all out of proportion by D.V.) which revealed that masses are still being said by/for the departing congregation. There seems to be some decided strangeness about this, as someone pointed to another case in which the congregation was told to do not more than matins for a period leading up to the reordination of their (former?) priest.
