Three in One

Tomorrow is almost my favourite Sunday of the year, when I get to proclaim once more that the ground of reality, the power that creates and holds the universe together, consists of three Persons so united in love that we can call them One.

The best phrase in the Mass Preface is “not one only Person”, which I am often tempted to sing as “not one lonely Person”. God can never be lonely, and he does not intend for us to be lonely. Unless we are in love with other people, we are not like God.

The desire to be independent of others is a devilish temptation. As Dag Hammarsjold, the second Secretary-General of the United Nations, said:
“What makes loneliness an anguish is not that I have no one to share my burden, but this: I have only my own burden to bear.”
